Why did God create suffering? Why did God create evil? This is perhaps the most asked religious and spiritual question, and people are often not satisfied with the answer. People think that suffering is a punishment for sin. They think that if they are suffering and going through challenges, it is because God is angry at them and he is punishing them for their sins. That could not be farther from the truth. The same way you pay money for items that you want, you pay suffering for spiritual achievements that you want. You wouldn’t say that the store owner if punishing his customers my making them pay for his products – that’s just how it works – everything costs something. So to achieve spiritual levels and holiness, you need to pay. You need to go through some challenges. And the reason it is so difficult to accept with love is that we don’t see it as God’s hand, and we don’t see the spiritual results of our suffering, and how much our soul is developing from it. So no, God is not punishing all the sinners, and if you are suffering it does not mean that you are a sinner. God loves you. God loves sinners too. If you are suffering, it is because God wants to give you a gift that you have to “buy”. But the whole idea of hell and punishment has been grossly misinterpreted and misunderstood, especially by the christians. Hell and suffering helps cleanse you, they help purify you. When you get up to heaven, to the world to come, you don’t want to have your sins clinging to you. You want to be pure up there and enjoy eternal life connected to Hashem, to the Creator. But you can’t bring your soul, which is covered in sins, in front of God. So you have to go though a purification process, to purify you from all of your sins. Not as a punishment, but as a simple reality of wanting to be close to God, and needing to go through a cleansing process first. Why do good people suffer, and why do bad things happen to good people, are still good questions, but this inspiring class gives some equally good answers.
